Characteristics
Red-headed vulture IUCN Status
EX Globally extinct RE Disappeared at the regional level CR Critically endangered EN Endangered (EN) VU Vulnerable NT Near Threatened LC Least concernDescription
Strict scavenger, exceptionally hunting very small prey. All types of carcasses, such as small birds, roadkill, with a preference for medium-sized mammals and the ‘freshest’ carcasses. May be shy when feeding alongside other Cathartes species, even though it is often among the first to arrive. Does not hesitate to leave the scene and return to finish off the remains. Several studies have shown that one of the specific characteristics of the Cathartes family is their highly developed sense of smell, which plays an important role in locating food.
Conservation
It is common throughout its range. 2,028,600 individuals observed migrating in Veracruz in 2003 (among the largest migrations observed in the world). Little direct persecution and good adaptation to environments disturbed by humans.
